Awards

Weber County 4-H livestock project members have many opportunities to earn awards. 

  • 4-H Livestock Achievment Score Card:  Every 4-H livestock project member can earn gold, silver or bronze level awards based upon the points earned throughout the year (October 1 - September 30). Points are earned by participation in market and showmanship classes, 4-H livestock bowl, 4-H livestock judging, and 4-H livestock tests.  Youth submit completed and signed score card form to the 4-H office by October 5th.   Awards will be presented at the Annual Jr. Livestock Meeting.
  • "4-H'ers Give 4" Centennial Service Campaign:  We challenge all Utah 4-H’ers to complete at least four hours of community service each month. Any 4-H community service you do with your 4-H club, county or state 4-H programs, or individually as a 4-H club member can be included. Service completed with your school, scouts, church, or other organizations, or things you do to help your family, such as babysitting or mowing the lawn (i.e., family chores), should not be included. Record service completed between Oct. 1, 2011, up through the Weber County Fair in 2012.  Turn in your Service Log by the county fair.  Weber County 4-H will provide prizes for youth who complete a total of four hours or more and an even bigger prizes for members who complete a total of forty-four hours or more! Our Weber County goal is 4,400 hours of community service!
  • 4-H Portfolios:  A 4-H portfolio is an organized summary of a member's complete experience in the 4-H program. It includes records on each project, activities, leadership, and community service. The portfolio includes a story and photo section that helps showcase these experiences.   Portfolios are due no later than October 1st each year.  Each portfolio is judged and earns a blue, red or white award.  Of the blue ribbon portfolios in each curriculum area, a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner is selected for each age group.  Awards are presented during 4-H Achievement Night.  Portfolios are also utilized to select scholarship recipients and delegates for national trips.
  • 4-H Club Awards:  Every 4-H club can earn gold, silver or bronze level honors based upon the club member's participation in portfolios, public speaking, community service, leadership, and projects.  Club submit the 4-H Club Award Report Form by October 20.   Clubs are honored during 4-H Achievment Night with prizes and cash awards sponsored by the Utah Commitment to Agriculture Foundation.
  • 4-H Contests:  4-H offers about twenty different contests each year.  Contests are judged Danish system, with each participant earning blue (excellent), red (good) or white (fair) honors.  Although members can participate in ANY contest that is offered for their age, some specific livestock-related contest that might be of special interest to livestock project members are the 4-H Livestock Bowl Contest, the 4-H Livestock Judging Contest and the Livestock Testing Program.

In addition to the 4-H contests listed above, all Jr. Livestock Youth (4-H & FFA) are eligible to compete for following awards at the county fair:

  • Market Classes:  Youth earn two types of premiums in market classes:
    •  Every animal is judged blue, red or white.  The exhibitor receives a premium of $3, $2 or $1 respectively.
    • Premiums are awarded in each class for the top six market animals. 
      • Sheep & Swine: 1st -  $25, 2nd - $20, 3rd - $15, 4th-6th - $5
      • Beef:  1st - $35, 2nd - $20, 3rd - $15, 4th-6th - $10
  • Showmanship Classes:  The top three showman in each grade division receive rosettes and premiums or gifts.  Awards vary and are determined by the Jr. Livestock Committee and the Showmanship Sponsor each year.
  • Clean Stall Award:  One club or pen is selected to receive the Clean Stall Award for each species.  The group receives a $25 premium and rosette.
  • Please note that cash awards earned during the Weber County Fair are paid in Premium Vouchers.  These are distributed immediately following each show (go to desk in the showring).   If they are not picked up imediately following the show, they are turned in to the Premium Bank and members can pick them up there.  Premium Vouchers that are not cashed by August 31 are forfeited.
