Teens Reaching Youth (TRY)

Teens Reaching Youth is a leadership program for youth in 8th – 12th grades. In the program, teams of 2 to 4 teens and their adult coach complete in-depth training in a specific curriculum. Then, they teach that project to younger youth during the year. Teens and coaches do not have to be enrolled in 4-H to become a TRY team.

Teams will have a choice of training dates and locations.  The team will also have a choice of curriculum.  A typical training is one-day, on a Saturday.  In most cases, training is free to TRY teams.   In 2009, the choices of curriculum include:
  • Robotics
  • Lotions and Potions
  • Recharge: Fun, Food & Fitness
  • Science Polooza

TRY teams will teach the curriculum to younger youth, choosing the group they teach (scouts, 4-H, Boys & Girls Club, afterschool, etc.).  The team will also decide when and where they teach.  Each team is expected to teach 6 hours of instruction to at least 15 youth during the year. Teams can choose to teach all at once (like a day camp program), or over time.

Awards:
  • Each member that completes training will receive a TRY shirt.
  • Youth completing their teaching commitment will be honored at 4-H Achievement Night based upon the following:
      • Gold – 31 or more youth taught 6 hours or more
      • Silver – 16 to 30 youth taught 6 hours or more
      •  Bronze – 5 to15 youth taught 6 hours or more

Application:  To apply, organize a team of 2 to 4 teens and recruit an adult coach. Each team member and coach needs to complete the application by the announced deadline.
