Eligibility: Grades 3-12
Team or Individual: Youth can compete individually or in teams of two.
Description: Participants build and program a robot using Lego MindStorm© kits to achieve the assigned challenges within the time limit. Laptop computers and RCX lego robotics kits are provided. Youth may also use their own kits. Teams will design, build and program a robot that will complete the assigned tasks.
Guidelines:
- All robots must leave from Start Area. Return depends on the challenge.
- No pre-written programs (example: follow a line) are allowed either in electronic or hard copy form.
- One point touch penalty for a max of five times for every time contestant touches the robot without it being in the start area of the Challenge Area.
- Design, build and program time will be 1 ½ hrs after the challenges are revealed. All work will be stopped once the 1 ½ time limit has expired. Only teams currently involved in the Challenge Board Round may modify their robots or programs.
- Maximum number of:
· 3 motors
· 2 touch sensors
· 1 light sensor
· 1 rotation sensor
· no other sensors allowed
- Youth may choose to use the RCX or NXT robotics platforms. Both RCX and NXT kits are available for loan in the county contest. Only 10 kits/computers are available.
- Youth may choose to bring their own robotics equipment and/or laptop.
- No non Lego parts can be used on the robot.
Competition:
- Round 1 – 1st Challenge: Teams will come to challenge board prepared to complete the first challenge. Each team will have 5 minutes at the Challenge Board to complete the challenge. During this time, no other teams may work with their robots. During the 5 minutes, the team at the challenge board can modify their robot and/or program as needed. The highest point award of the round will be used in overall points. At the end of Round 1, all teams will have 15 minutes to modify their robot and re-program their robots in preparation for Round 2.
- Round 2 – 2nd Challenge: Teams will come to challenge board prepared to complete the second challenge. Each team will have 5 minutes at the Challenge Board to complete the challenge. During this time, no other teams may work with their robots. During the 5 minutes, the team at the challenge board can modify their robot and/or program as needed. The highest point award of the round will be used in overall points. At the end of Round 1, all teams will have 15 minutes to modify their robot and re-program their robots in preparation for Round 3.
- Round 3: 3rd Challenge: Teams will come to challenge board prepared to complete the third challenge. Each team will have 5 minutes at the Challenge Board to complete the challenge. During this time, no other teams may work with their robots. During the 5 minutes, the team at the challenge board can modify their robot and/or program as needed. The highest point award of the round will be used in overall points.
Scoring: Points will be awarded as follows:

Points will be given based on the number of objects placed inside the target. 5 points for each object in the center, 3 points for each in the middle circle, 1 point each for the outer circle.

Points will be divided up as follows: 15 to pick up; 15 to bring back.

15 points to navigate the passageway to object, 15 points for knocking the object over and 15 points for exiting through the passageway.

Awards: Each youth receives a certificate and earns a blue, red or white ribbon based on the Danish judging system:
· Blue (excellent): 90-100 ($3 clover bucks)
· Red (good ): 75-89 ($2 clover bucks)
· White (fair): 74 and below
