Dates: January 19 or 29, 2012 (still being scheduled)
Eligibility: 3-12 Grades
Team or Individual: Youth may participate individually or in teams of two. Teams must be made up of youth in the same grade division. Youth that have not participated in this contest before are encouraged to work as a team for this contest.
Registration Deadline: January 12, 2012 (one week before event). Youth must submit Information & Recipe Form and Menu Form at time of registration.
Location: Orion Junior High School
Time: There will be two sessions held. The first session will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude at 5 p.m. The second session will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 6:30 p.m. At registration, youth will specify which session they will attend. Limited slots are available at each session and will be on a first come first serve basis.
Description: Youth plan and prepare a nutritionally balanced, affordable meal for two judges. This is a timed, 1-hour contest with 45 minutes to cook the meal and 15 minutes to clean up.
Awards: Each youth receives a certificate and earns a blue, red or white ribbon based on the Danish judging system:
· Blue (excellent): 90-100 ($3 clover bucks)
· Red (good ): 75-89 ($2 clover bucks)
· White (fair): 74 and below
Guidelines: For the county contests, youth will submit recipes and all forms at the time of registration.
Resources: Contestants will find the Utah 4-H Healthy Cuisine Guidelines most helpful as they prepare for this contest.
Judging: Contestants will be evaluated using this score card.
Next Steps:
· Youth in 9th - 12th grades earning a blue ribbon in the county contest are invited to compete in State Contests in July.
