Dates: Youth can schedule an appointment with Wendy Rees (399-8202) to compete on one of the following contest dates. These are the only contest dates that will be offered, so do not wait until the last minute and expect to get to compete in June. Only 13 slots are available during each contest day.

Team or Individual: Individual competition only.
Eligibility: 3rd-12th Grades
Description: Contestants will construct a quilt using traditional piecing, nontraditional piecing, hand or machine appliqué and machine or hand quilted, and demonstrate a skill or method used in the construction of the quilt. Contestants will be judged on quilt construction, and the demonstration.
Guidelines:
2. Final scores are based on the total construction score and demonstration score.
3. Quilts must be constructed by the 4-H member using traditional piecing, nontraditional piecing, hand or machine appliqué and machine or hand quilted.
4. Quilts should be at least 38.5” X 38.5”
5. No “cheater cloth” with printed patchwork design, whole cloth or tied quilts will be allowed. No miniature quilts and no wearable art quilts. No quilt kits will be accepted.
6. Quilts may be pieced by the 4-H’er but quilted by someone else. It must be indicated who made the quilt and who quilted the quilt.
7. A 4” hanging sleeve must be attached on the back of the quilt.
8. Demonstration will be on a technique used in construction of quilt.
9. Contestants are responsible for bringing equipment, supplies and visual aids.
10. Contestants may use notes. However, excessive use of notes may be counted against the contestant. This will be at the discretion of the judges.
11. A public address system will not be used, but an easel and table will be provided.
12. A quilt stand will be provided to display finished quilt during the demonstration.
13. Presentations must be at least 10 minutes in length, but no longer than 15 minutes. Time for answering questions is not counted in the presentation length. One point will be deducted for each minute or fraction of a minute under 10 minutes or over 15 minutes.
14. Contestants should cite their major reference materials as part of their presentation.
15. Only the judges may ask questions of the contestant. Question time will not be counted in the allotted time. Contestant should repeat the question & then answer it.
Scoring: Entries will be judged using the following criteria:
- Quilting Demo Scorecard
- Quilting Construction (quilted by participant)
- Quilting Construction (quilted by someone else)
Sample Questions: Judges will ask questions following the demonstration using the following sample questions.
Awards: Each youth receives a certificate and earns a blue, red or white ribbon based on the Danish judging system:
· Blue (excellent): 90-100 ($3 clover bucks)
· Red (good ): 75-89 ($2 clover bucks)
· White (fair): 74 and below
Next Steps: County youth in 9th-12th grades earning a blue ribbon in the county contest are invited to compete in State Contests in July.
